I think that we as humans can be really selfish and if we don't have an incentive, we often don't do what we should. For us Christ-followers, our incentive is to be like Christ. But so many people need rules to follow in order to see outside themselves and their needs. I don't think the government should regulate every area of our life, for sure, and this is problematic because (1) regulation is a slippery slope and (2) even those with the best of intentions get power-hungry when they get in power. I totally agree that those who are most vocal about global warming are those rich people who fly in jets all the time and do so many other things that hurt the environment. It's ridiculous hypocrisy. I have been thinking lately, though, that we as Christians should want to take care of the planet God put us on, right? I mean, he has entrusted it to our care, just like he did the animals (Gen 1:28) and the earth (Gen 1:29, 2:15). So I think we could argue that "saving the planet" is not only a liberal hippie idea, but also a Biblical one. Our purposes might be different (they do it to avoid an ice age or whatever and we do it so that we might honor God by treating his creation--all of it--with respect. What do you think?
